Single Storey Extension & Alterations, North Norfolk.

Project Location: Gimingham, North Norfolk.

A single storey extension and complete refurbishment project located in Gimingham, Norfolk. Sterne Design was approached by our client in 2021 asking us to guide them through the entire process, from the initial purchase through to completion. Careful consideration was taken throughout the project to ensure a contemporary extension was produced yet still playing homage towards the existing, retaining the importance of the original thatched cottage and capturing the historic character throughout. The main extension continues the thatch roofing with the walls adding a contrasting material through the use of vertical cladding. The space internally is vaulted with apex glazing to highlight the mature trees and fields which surround the site.

Gable End

The project maximises the stunning views which surround the site with large windows upon the extension and large open spaces inside, providing a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor environments. The interior combines a minimalist and refined aesthetic with light and airy spaces filled with an abundance of natural light, against the more traditional features within the existing cottage.

Original Features

A view from the existing, fully refurbished living room, through into the new kitchen and extension. Existing features have been kept with the fireplace being made dual aspect so that this can be enjoyed from both perspectives.

Side Profile

A continuation of the thatched roof upon the new extension with ridge detailing to compliment the existing cottage. Throughout the design process we worked closely with North Norfolk District Council and their conservation officer to ensure the proposed finish was to the highest standard.
