Replacement Dwelling, Norfolk.

Project Location: Colkirk, Fakenham, Norfolk.

Sterne Design was approached by our clients to re-design their current plot which housed a small two-bed bungalow with a new five-bed replacement dwelling to provide adequate space/room for their young and growing family. During the design stage, meetings were held on site to ensure the design and each room met with our clients needs. Materials were carefully considered to ensure the new build retained a relationship with the local vernacular, yet still offered panoramic views from large sections of glass allowing us to utilise the stunning countryside views surrounding the site. The sun path was studied whilst designing as well as the pattern our clients would take throughout the day, ensuring the two works in parallel.

The sun's trajectory and the occupants' activities throughout the day should be invaluable considerations in the design process. By understanding how the sun moves across a site, we can strategically position windows and skylights to optimise natural light infiltration and minimise the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours. Additionally, aligning living spaces, such as living rooms and kitchens, with the path of the sun allows for an intuitive flow of light throughout the day. By integrating the daily patterns and routines of the owners into our designs, we ensure that the architectural spaces perfectly cater to their needs, offering seamless transitions from breakfast to dinner, work to relaxation. Ultimately, a sun-centered design approach establishes a harmonious relationship between the architecture and its inhabitants, enhancing their well-being and connection to the natural environment.

Through any new build we aim to approach sustainable design with utmost commitment and creativity. Our goal is to seamlessly blend eco-friendly features with elegant aesthetics. We prioritise the use of specifying locally sourced materials where possible to minimise carbon footprint and support the local economy. By carefully curating the design process, we aim to create homes that not only minimise environmental impact but also provide a beautiful and comfortable living space for generations to come.

Hand Sketches Produced During Concept Design Stage

A collection of hand sketches produced during the early design stage, exploring the potential form. Multiple ideas and options were put on paper prior to the final configuration being shown to our clients for their new home. Hand sketches form a fundamental part of any architectural development, allowing us to easily transfer ideas to paper to then be reviewed internally and often open alternative thoughts which might not have been developed otherwise.
