Sheringham Town Hall, North Norfolk

Development of Sheringham Town Hall.

Project Location: Sheringham, North Norfolk.

Sterne Design was approached by the owner of the former Sheringham town hall to convert the space into a residential property in accordance with class O of national planning policy. Careful consideration was taken whilst producing the proposed design to ensure the historic values of the site were retained and were kept true to the buildings origin. The Former Town Hall is located on the corner of St Peter’s Road and Church Street, set within the conservation area for Sheringham and dates back to 1901 (the year Sheringham became a town with the creation of Sheringham Urban District Council).

Since closing its doors in 2019 following the town councils relocation to the Sheringham community centre, the former town hall is now ready for its next chapter in life which is something Sterne Design was truly honoured to be part of.

The design has been driven by seeking to retain the importance of the former town hall which forms a significant landmark within Sheringham. With careful consideration we have been able to provide a new life for the building without any unnecessary demolition or removing any of its original characteristics. Upon entering the space you are immediately struck by the historic detailing and references dating back to the previous use. As part of this proposal we look to uncover these decorative elements of the building, emphasising and integrating them into our design.

The current chambers will form the main living space, centred upon the original ceiling which forms a heptagon. The internal face of the clock tower will also become visible allowing the original mechanisms to be viewed internally, adding another subtle reference back to its former use.
